Leggere John Muir non è mai semplice, almeno per me, in “Andare in montagna è tornare a casa” vengono presentati 10 scritti prodotti tra la fine dell’800 e l’inizio del ‘900 per lo più inediti al mercato italiano che mostrano la grandissima sensibilità di un uomo che ha votato la sua intera vita al servizio della Natura.
Quello che dal mio punto di vista emerge una volta di più e non solo leggendo Muir, è che i temi con cui oggi siamo costantemente bombardati, erano in fin dei conti gli stessi di 100 o 150 anni fa.
Leggere passaggi di questo tenore:
“Migliaia di persone stanche, coi nervi a pezzi e super civilizzate cominciano a credere che andare sulle montagne è andare a casa; che lo stato selvaggio è una necessità; che i parchi e le aree protette di montagna sono utili, non solo perché sorgenti di boschi e di fiumi ricchi di acqua ma perché sorgenti di vita.“
mi lasciano onestamente interdetto perchè se prendiamo questa frase, possiamo tranquillamente trasportarla ai giorni nostri ed etichettarla come “scontata”.
Ma chi era John Muir?
John Muir è stato un famoso naturalista, scrittore e attivista ambientale statunitense, nato nel 1838 in Scozia e emigrato negli Stati Uniti con la sua famiglia da giovane. È considerato uno dei padri del movimento per la conservazione della natura e dei parchi nazionali negli Stati Uniti.
Muir è noto per la sua passione per la natura selvaggia e per i suoi sforzi per proteggere gli ambienti naturali. Ha trascorso gran parte della sua vita esplorando e studiando la flora e la fauna delle regioni montuose dell’America del Nord, specialmente della Sierra Nevada in California. Le sue esperienze lo hanno portato a fondare il Sierra Club nel 1892, un’organizzazione dedicata alla conservazione della natura.
Come scrittore, Muir è celebre per la sua prosa eloquente e ispiratrice che ha contribuito a sensibilizzare il pubblico sull’importanza di proteggere l’ambiente naturale. I suoi scritti, inclusi libri come “The Mountains of California” e articoli su riviste come “Atlantic Monthly”, hanno avuto un impatto duraturo sul movimento ambientalista e sulla coscienza pubblica riguardo alla conservazione della natura.
Muir è stato anche una figura chiave nella creazione del Parco Nazionale di Yosemite e ha influenzato significativamente la politica ambientale degli Stati Uniti. La sua eredità è oggi celebrata non solo negli Stati Uniti ma in tutto il mondo per il suo impegno nella protezione delle aree naturali e per la sua ispirazione a connettersi con la natura in modo profondo e rispettoso.
Ma tornando al libro in questione, dei 10 capitoli presenti vorrei porre l’attenzione su 3 in particolare.

Una veduta ravvicinata dell’alta sierra
Scritto nel 1894 quando Muir, dopo aver accompagnato una coppia di pittori all’interno della Sierra, si avventura in una scalata solitaria del monte Ritter. Con dovizia di particolari ci racconta non solo ciò che vede, ma soprattutto il proprio stato d’animo di fronte ai classici dubbi di chi affronta un terreno a lui sconosciuto.
L’aspetto che più mi ha sorpreso è stata la sua capacità di addentrarsi, salire e ridiscendere mantenendo una padronanza della geografia e dell’orientamento che mi hanno assolutamente sconvolto.
E’ come se la Sierra fosse parte di lui, come se scorresse sotto la sua pelle disegnando una cartina visibile a lui solo.
Una tempesta nel bosco
Scritto nel 1894, Muir racconta della sua esperienza durante una burrasca tra le foreste della Sierra e di come la manifestazione degli elementi naturali sia occasione da non perdere, infatti
*E’ in occasioni del genere che la Natura ha sempre qualcosa di raro da mostrarci, e mettere in pericolo la propria vita e i propri arti è migliore dell’esperienza che si potrebbe fare standosene accovacciati a imprecare sotto un tetto.
Man mano che la tempesta aumenta e si manifesta, Muir sperimenta questa immersione emotiva con l’elemento vento. Spesso penso a come fotografare il vento, beh la risposta più semplice è presente proprio in questo scritto:
E così, quando guardiamo a una foresta agitata, possiamo vedere qualcosa del vento che la scuote – grazie ai suoi effetti sugli alberi. Laggiù lo vediamo discendere in una scarica di increspature, come fosse acqua, travolgendo i pini incurvati da collina a collina. Più vicino vediamo volare piume e foglie staccate, ora accelerando sulle correnti, ora volteggiando in piccoli vortici o sfuggendo a questi, librandosi in grandi cupole d’aria che s’impennano verso l’alto, o gettandosi sulle creste come fossero fiamme.
Il vento è uno di quegli elementi che può essere rappresentato solo attraverso gli effetti che produce.
Stickeen: un cane e un ghiacciaio
In questo scritto del 1909, Muir racconta di una delle sue esplorazioni dell’Alaska in particolare della regione della Glacier Bay. Al di là di quello che rappresenta la presenza del cane Stickeen, in questo racconto ho ritrovato gli ingredienti e lo stile che sarà quello predominante nei libri di avventura ed alpinismo che poi nel ‘900 faranno scuola in una certa letteratura di montagna.
Anche qui, la fibra eccezionale di Muir, credo avesse una forza d’animo fuori dal comune, come sempre in solitaria, fronteggia uno degli ambienti più pericolosi ed ostili, senza attrezzatura, come il ghiacciaio.
Verrebbe da dire che nelle sue esplorazioni sia stato sempre un uomo piuttosto fortunato. Da suoi racconti traspare questo.
In conclusione, dato che Muir rappresenta anche uno dei primi e più ferventi sostenitori della conservazione della Natura, voglio chiudere questo post sul suo libro “Andare in montagna è tornare a casa” con una citazione che mi trova particolarmente in sintonia con il suo pensiero:
ci viene raccontato che il mondo fu creato appositamente per l’uomo – una congettura non corroborata dai fatti. Numerosi uomini rimangono spiacevolmente sorpresi quando trovano nell’universo divino qualcosa, non importa se vivo o morto, che in qualche modo non possono mangiare o rendere – come dicono loro – utile ai propri fini. Essi hanno una precisa comprensione dogmatica delle intenzioni del Creatore, ed è quasi impossibile sentirsi in colpa nel parlare con empietà del loro Dio, proprio come quando parliamo di idoli pagani.
Anche Muir, come altri, vedeva la nostra specie come parte integrante e non separata dell’ambiente naturale. Muir credeva fermamente che l’interconnessione tra l’uomo e la natura fosse essenziale per il benessere spirituale e fisico dell’umanità.
Oggi il pensiero di Muir è particolarmente attuale in quanto la crisi di valori, e di conseguenza dell’ambiente che stiamo vivendo, mette in evidenza i limiti di una tecno-società che per quanto soddisfi determinati bisogni (sarà vero?) ne lascia molti altri, più profondi e più ancestrali, completamente trascurati.
